Convicted of
Anthony Mastanduno, 61, formerly of Farmingdale, New York and later of Rutherford County, North Carolina, picked up a blue flagpole-like object and threw it like a javelin at police officers, then grabbed a stolen police shield and pushed against the officers' line while striking them with a telescoping baton during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, earning the online nickname "Shield Grampy" from internet "sedition hunters" because of his age and use of the stolen shield. He pleaded guilty to six felony counts, including civil disorder and assaulting officers using a dangerous weapon, with other charges dismissed. U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan sentenced him on 6/27/2024 to 57 months of incarceration, 24 months of supervised release, a $630 special assessment, and $4,174 in restitution.
