Geoffrey William Sills, 31, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, joined the crowd pushing against police at the U.S. Capitol's Lower West Terrace tunnel at about 2:13 p.m. during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot while wearing black goggles and a gas mask, threw several pole-like objects at retreating officers while filming and posting to social media, wrested a police baton away from an MPD officer, pointed a flashing strobe light at the police line to disorient them, and struck at least two officers with the stolen baton. He pleaded not guilty to all charges; a jury found him guilty of obstruction of an official proceeding, assault with a dangerous weapon, obstruction of Congress, and robbery. He was sentenced to 52 months of incarceration, with the judge calling his conduct "the most troubling, the most outrageous" of any Jan. 6 defendant sentenced to that point.
