Jacob Gavin Hiles, a Virginia Beach charter fishing captain, was identified through Facebook photos and videos geotagged at "Capitol Hill" during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, and later posted about being tear-gassed and being nearby when fellow rioter Ashli Babbitt was fatally shot attempting to breach the Speaker's Lobby. He pleaded guilty in September to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building, with three other misdemeanors dismissed. He was sentenced on Dec. 6, 2021 to two years of probation and 60 hours of community service; he later unsuccessfully sued CNN for $37 million over its coverage of his case.
