Convicted of
James Phillip Womack is the son of Steve Womack, a Republican U.S. congressman who has represented Arkansas's 3rd congressional district since 2011. James Womack has a lengthy criminal history: in September 2018, at age 31, he was arrested on more than ten state charges involving drugs and firearms. He entered a plea agreement and in 2019 received a nine-year state prison sentence on multiple felony counts.
On April 26, 2023, a federal grand jury indicted Womack on two counts: distribution of more than five grams of actual methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. He reached a plea agreement in which he pleaded guilty to the methamphetamine distribution count; the firearms charge was dismissed. On May 21, 2024, U.S. District Judge Timothy Brooks sentenced him in the Western District of Arkansas.
Original sentence
Sentenced on May 21, 2024 to 96 months (eight years) in federal prison, five years' supervised release, and a $1,900 fine.
On January 15, 2026, President Trump commuted the remaining custodial portion of Womack's sentence. The commutation — which is not a pardon — left the underlying conviction intact and preserved the five-year supervised release requirement. The White House cited Womack's good behavior in prison and family hardships, including his mother's diagnosis with abdominal cancer and his brother's seizure disorder.
