Convicted of
James Tate Grant, 31, of Cary, North Carolina, helped lead the first assault on police at the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, joining others in ramming a metal crowd-control barrier into an officer with such force that it hurled the officer backward, slamming his head against a handrail and then stairs and causing him to lose consciousness and suffer a concussion. He pleaded not guilty to some counts and guilty to others; following a bench trial, U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb found him guilty of felony civil disorder, assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, and obstruction of an official proceeding, though the obstruction conviction was later dismissed. He was sentenced on 9/19/2024 to three years in federal prison, 36 months of supervised release, and $2,000 in restitution.
