Convicted of
Joseph Lewis is a British billionaire and the principal owner of the Tavistock Group, a large private investment organization, and the controlling shareholder of English Premier League soccer club Tottenham Hotspur. He pleaded guilty in January 2024 to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and two counts of securities fraud in the Southern District of New York. Prosecutors alleged that over the course of several years, Lewis repeatedly misused material non-public information he obtained through his business dealings — sharing stock tips with employees, romantic partners, friends, and personal staff as a form of compensation and gifts. In one specific instance, he loaned two of his private aircraft pilots $500,000 and encouraged them to purchase shares in cancer drug company Mirati Therapeutics ahead of the company announcing favorable clinical trial results. His company, Broad Bay Ltd., also pleaded guilty to making false SEC filings to conceal Lewis's ownership stake in a pharmaceutical company, and separately agreed to pay $50 million in penalties.
