Convicted of
Leonard Gruppo, an Army veteran, traveled to Washington to hear then-President Trump speak at the "Stop the Steal" rally and, after Trump said he would join the crowd at the Capitol, went with other supporters to the building during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, spending about seven minutes inside before voluntarily turning himself in to the FBI and later cooperating with the House committee investigating the attack; Chief Judge Beryl Howell noted he hadn't bragged on social media or joined in chants. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building. He was sentenced on 10/29/2021 to 24 months of probation, 90 days of home detention, and a $3,000 fine, less than the 30 days in prison prosecutors had sought.
