Convicted of
Lucas Denney, 45, a decorated Army veteran, the son of a Dallas police officer, and the self-declared leader of a militia he founded called the Patriot Boys of North Texas, planned his trip to Washington in advance, discussing buying pepper spray and body armor and recruiting another person to join him; during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot he swung a PVC pole at a police officer but struck a photojournalist instead, and repeatedly attacked officers, including punching one in the face shield. He pleaded guilty in March 2023 to assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers using a dangerous weapon. U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss, saying Denney "came looking for a fight," sentenced him on Sept. 28, 2022 to 52 months in prison, 36 months of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment.
