Convicted of
Mark Andrew Mazza, 56, of Shelbyville, Indiana, carried two loaded handguns onto Capitol grounds during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, including a revolver loaded with shotgun shells and hollow-point bullets that he lost on the Lower West Terrace, joined other rioters in pushing through more than 20 officers defending the tunnel entrance, and took a baton from an officer's hand before striking another officer in the arm with it; he later told the sentencing judge he "got caught up in the mob mentality," though the judge said he was alarmed Mazza had brought two firearms. He pleaded guilty to two charges, assaulting an officer using a dangerous weapon and carrying a pistol without a license under D.C. Code, with other charges, including additional firearms and theft counts, dismissed. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg sentenced him on 10/21/2022 to 5 years of incarceration, 3 years of supervised release, a $200 special assessment, and $2,150 in restitution.
