Peter Schwartz, 49, threw the first folding chair at police during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, an act prosecutors said opened the police line and allowed hundreds of rioters to overwhelm officers; he then found an abandoned Metropolitan Police Department pepper spray canister and used it on officers, forcing them to retreat and don gas masks, before finding and using a second can of pepper spray against them. He pleaded not guilty to all charges; a jury found him guilty on all ten counts in December 2022, including four felony counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced on 5/5/2023 to 170 months of incarceration, 36 months of supervised release, a $920 special assessment, and $2,000 in restitution — at the time the longest sentence handed down in a Jan. 6 case; the obstruction conviction was later vacated on 1/17/2025.
