Convicted of
Richard Markey, of Wolcott, Connecticut, traveled to Washington, D.C. on 1/5/2021 and the next day made his way to the Lower West Terrace Tunnel, the site of some of the riot's most violent clashes, where he climbed on top of other rioters and assaulted police officers with a baton and his fists, striking them with a pole seven times until it broke. He pleaded guilty to a felony count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers using a dangerous weapon, with other charges dismissed. U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta sentenced him on 12/6/2024 to 30 months of incarceration, 36 months of supervised release, a $100 special assessment, and $2,000 in restitution; he was released from prison just over a week into his sentence after receiving a presidential pardon.
