Samuel Reed was a co-founder and the Chief Technology Officer of BitMEX, the cryptocurrency derivatives exchange. Along with co-founders Arthur Hayes and Benjamin Delo, and employee Gregory Dwyer, Reed was charged in 2020 with willfully failing to establish and maintain an adequate anti-money laundering program in violation of the Bank Secrecy Act. BitMEX deliberately operated without know-your-customer and anti-money laundering controls, marketing itself as a platform where users could trade virtually anonymously — an arrangement prosecutors alleged facilitated money laundering by drug traffickers and other criminals. Reed pleaded guilty to one count of violating the Bank Secrecy Act. As CTO, Reed was responsible for building and maintaining the technical infrastructure that enabled the exchange's anonymous operation.

Reed was sentenced on July 13, 2022, to 18 months' probation — a lighter sentence than co-founder Hayes, reflecting his role and cooperation. He received a full and unconditional pardon on March 27, 2025, alongside his co-defendants.
