Convicted of
Thomas Raymond Gallagher, 62, of Bridgewater, New Hampshire, spent about 30 minutes in the U.S. Capitol complex during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, including about nine minutes in the Capitol Visitor Center, and was seen on video and described by another participant as having admonished rioters not to engage in violence, including urging one person to put down a chair rather than throw it at police. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building, with three other charges dropped. U.S. District Judge Carl J. Nichols, citing his sincere contrition and comparatively minor conduct, sentenced him on 10/14/2021 to 24 months of probation, $500 in restitution, 60 hours of community service, and a $10 special assessment, declining to impose the home confinement prosecutors had sought.
